Enough

It’s time to stop the madness.

Real and strict regulations must be placed on guns in the US now, NRA be damned.  Stop the rhetoric about what the constitution allows.  The constitution talks about a “well-regulated militia”.  There are no militias involved and there are precious few regulations.

No one has the right to own a weapon of mass destruction.  We invaded Iraq to eliminate imaginary WMD’s, while the real thing proliferates at home.

Only a madman would support the availability of automatic (or semi-automatic) weapons to the general public.  Only a murderous madman would be against the complete elimination of assault weapons.

Ironically, there was a school attack in China almost at the same time as the Newtown shooting.  See the difference?

As I said in jest a couple of posts ago, I honestly try to avoid taking strong stands on controversial topics in this blog.  I normally don’t want to offend people, but I can’t hold back when children are being slaughtered.

Guns don’t die.  Children do.

The problem goes much deeper than banning guns (see below the last paragraph from the Chinese article). It’s the same approach as banning box cutters on airplanes to stop hijackers.
These people have serious problems, and if guns were not available;would find other ways to carry out their wicked deeds, like fertilizer bombs or whatever other evil could be imagined.
I wish I had answers to eliminate these tragedies but banning guns won’t work, and will take time and effort away from finding real solutions.

“In one of the worst incidents, a man described as an unemployed, middle-aged doctor killed eight children with a knife in March 2010 to vent his anger over a thwarted romantic relationship”.

Sorry, but neither the logic nor the math hold up. Comparing eight killings two years ago in a country more than twice the size of the US pales in comparison to the one mass shooting per month that the US is averaging this year. How many could the knife-wielder have killed had he carried an automatic weapon? 20? 100? Thank God, we’ll never know. And that’s just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

On average, about 100,000 people are shot each year in the US. 30,000 are shot to death, 3,000 of those are teens and children. Sacrifices on the altar of an illusory “right”. Seriously, what would those numbers look like if just automatic weapons were banned?

Comparing box cutters to AK-47’s has no meaning. Allowing individual ownership of assault weapons and automatic weapons makes about as much sense as private ownership of nuclear bombs. If there was an NRA for those, they might be allowed today.

One thing we agree on is that eliminating guns will not end violence. Hearts must change. In the meantime, fewer guns will save lives. A lot of lives.

To paraphrase a Wise Man, “If you live by the gun, you’ll die by the gun.”

(This is why I don’t post such controversial things. I don’t want to get into arguments with friends.)

Now tell me what's on your mind...
